The Undercurrent

A Relational Laboratory

Healing doesn't happen in a vacuum. It happens in relationships.
The Undercurrent is a space to practice being in one.

The Undercurrent is a six-week experiential relational laboratory for 10 people who want to explore how they show up in relationships—by understanding what happens in their body and nervous system, practicing new ways of relating in real time, and receiving thoughtful feedback about how they are experienced by others.

You have an incredible amount of self-awareness. You know why you do what you do. You just haven’t been able to change it.

In a digital and AI-driven age, we are flooded with information, advice, and endless opportunities to optimize—reinforcing the belief that the answer lies in thinking harder, finding the right strategy, or fixing ourselves from the neck up.

We are relational therapists who firmly believe that relationships are the primary vehicle for healing. No one teaches us how to be in a relationship — we learn experientially. And for the vast majority of us, that education is deeply problematic.

We know that insight alone is insufficient for change, and we wanted to create a relational space where we could practice showing up differently together.

Trying to change a deeply ingrained pattern using just your intellect is like trying to learn how to dive by reading a manual.

You don’t need more information—you need a safe open water space to jump into.

Inside the laboratory, you will:

  • Practice being in relationship within a small, intentionally created group—not just talk about relationships in theory.

  • Learn the language of your body and understand how sensations, nervous-system responses, and protective parts shape the way you connect in real time.

  • Receive concrete, compassionate feedback about how you show up in relationships and how others experience you.

  • Experiment with new ways of relating through guided practices focused on safety, intimacy, rupture, repair, and authentic connection.

  • Be supported by two relational therapists with advanced training in Somatic Experiencing and Internal Family Systems.

The Undercurrent is for you if:

  • You want to access a deeper understanding of how you show up in relationships

  • You want to be in conversation with your heart and body and not just lead with your head

  • You keep repeating the same pattern and can’t seem to stop. This can show up as  people pleasing, self-criticism, perfectionism, over functioning or anything else that stops you from connecting authentically

  • You want to learn to track what happens to your nervous system in relationships

  • You have a lot of insight and it hasn’t led to the change you want in relationship to yourself and others

We met in graduate school almost a decade ago while training to become marriage and family therapists. We found healing not just in the tools we learned, but in our relationship with one another. We saw and celebrated parts of each other that were hard to see in ourselves. Our capacity to heal swelled in our friendship.

The Undercurrent is our way of offering that to others.

Our Approach

We combine Somatic Experiencing and Internal Family Systems. Somatic Experiencing helps you understand how your body holds stress and safety. Internal Family Systems offers a framework for understanding how you are not a singular entity but composed of many “parts” or sub-personalities each with its own history and role. The Undercurrent weaves these approaches together so you understand how your parts show up in relationship and in your body.

The six-week arc

We’ve intentionally developed a six-week experiential curriculum that takes participants through the arc of relationship: meeting, creating safety, building intimacy, rupture, repair and integration. Each week, a core skill is taught and participants are guided through an experiment to apply the skill in real time with one another. Each week builds upon the practices of the previous week.

Why we created this

In a time when we exist and relate in digital spaces more than we do “in real life” we all are craving going back to basics; putting our feet on the ground, connecting human to human, not outsourcing our ways of knowing.

The Undercurrent is a space to do just that.

To understand who we truly are, we need to learn how to build capacity to stay with what is inside of us. Not just from a space of self awareness, but really learning how to be with – without running, without shutting down, without feeling completely overwhelmed.

The Undercurrent is designed to practice how to be in relationship with yourself and relationship with others in real time and take all the lessons to your relationships outside of this container.

We have experienced, time and time again, the quiet magic of what happens in a therapeutic relationship. The felt sense of being truly seen by a compassionate, attuned witness, is one of the most profound catalysts for change we know.

We've watched it happen in our work with clients. We've felt it happen between us in our friendship. Parts of ourselves that had been in hiding for years began to soften, not because of a technique or a framework, but because of the relationship itself. Because someone was there, steady and present.

That is what we wanted to build The Undercurrent around.

Not a curriculum. Not a set of tools. But the lived experience of being seen — and the practice of learning to see others — in real time, together.

Because what we know, after years of sitting in the therapy office, is this: the attachment is not a by-product of healing. It is healing.

What Sets The Lab Apart

  • From Insight to Action: We weave together Somatic Experiencing (how your body holds stress and safety) and Internal Family Systems (how your protective sub-personalities show up) so you can shift patterns in real time.

  • Body-Based Safety: Learn to track subtle nervous system signals so you can stay present during activation instead of defaulting to self-defense.

  • The "Re-Do": Pause moments of tension and experiment with new ways of showing up with expert therapists support every step of the way.

  • The Undercurrent Report: Receive curated, written relational feedback from the facilitators and other members of the group detailing what it’s actually like to be in relationship with you—removing the guesswork and illuminating your relational impact.

What your journey includes

Like a wave, the Undercurrent follows an arc of activation, release, and integration.

  • Six weekly 90-minute group laboratory sessions, co-facilitated by two therapists trained in Somatic Experiencing and Internal Family Systems.

  • Two private 30-minute coaching integration sessions – with each of the facilitators. At the close of the arc, each member is offered a 30-minute integration session with each facilitator — to be booked within one month of the final group session. This is an individual space to name what has shifted, what is still moving, and where you want to go from here.

  • The Self Guide: A companion through the Undercurrent – A workbook to guide you through deeper exploration and integration between the sessions. This includes journal prompts, meditations, and resources.

  • Lifetime access to Somatic Waves — an audio series of twelve micro-moments of regulation based on researched-back therapeutic interventions. Each micro-moment reinforces a skill explored in The Lab. This gives you the opportunity to practice and integrate the relationship you are building with your body outside The Lab.

  • The Undercurrent Report – Thoughtful feedback from all participants around what it is like to be in a relationship with you. What surfaced within and between participants will be collected and shared in thoughtful written feedback by the facilitators.
